New Masters programme MSc in Building Services Engineering being offered at BUiD

BUiD’s new Master's programme MSc Building Services was launched on 11th December at BUiD, applicants interested in the programme can apply online for January 2018 intake. The new programme is first of its kind in the region. It was designed through the support of CIBSE local chapter here in the UAE. This Programme will provide professional building services’ engineers with advanced knowledge and skills in BSE related fields including, but not limited to advanced HVAC Systems, Building Energy Modelling, Building Electrical Systems, Lighting Technologies, Acoustics, Plumbing, Building Control and Management, Security, Fire Systems and Commissioning.                                                                                                                          

At the launch event, Prof Abdullah Alshamsi welcomed the guests, spoke about the importance of Construction sector to the UAE economy, and explained the relevance and significance of this new programme that would help in the capacity building of the human capital for UAE vision 2021 and Expo 2020. HE Mr Ahmed Butti Al Muhairbi - Energy Supreme Council member spoke about UAE pursuit of Green growth and the UAE’s Energy Strategy 2050. He said BUiD’s new programme would help train professionals in the field of energy management. It would also help develop and nurture talent that can contribute towards Smart and efficient buildings and help UAE meet its strategic objectives of Energy 2050 strategy. Dr Dawood Al Hajiri, Dubai Municipality – Planning & Eng. Section, President of the UAE Society of Engineers spoke about the importance of Higher Education Qualifications in meeting future innovation and staffing needs of Dubai Municipality.

Prof Bassam Abu Hijleh, Dean of Faculty of Engineering and IT, spoke about the new programme in depth. He mentioned that BUiD’s new programme is in time as UAE’s Energy 2030 strategy talks about Healthy, Happy, sustainable, Green, productive and secure cities. The graduates of this programme would go on to become experts who could provide solutions to inefficient buildings through retrofitting projects and on the major construction projects that have high-energy consumption due to the HVAC factor. This programme is suitable for a wide range of professionals involved in all phases of the BSE industry such as designers, consultants, contractors, commissioning agents and facility managers. Such professionals will typically have an Engineering academic background (e.g. Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Architectural etc.) or other related fields (e.g. IT and building controls specialists).

BUiD managed to conduct a very informative session through its Expert Round-Table Discussion on the topic of the future of building services engineering in the UAE, GCC and broader MENA Region. Industry Experts such as Mr. Mark Wilson, Practice Lead for T&I Building Services - Atkins, Mr. Liju Thomas Eapen, President ASHRAE Falcon Chapter, Mr. Majd Fayyad, Deputy Manager (Sustainability and Benchmarking Senior manager) - Farnek Services and Dr. Alaa A-Ameer –BUiD (Head of BSE MSc programme) took part in the discussion.The panel was chaired by Prof Bassam Abu Hijleh.

Dr Alaa Ameer, Head of MSc Building Services Engineering programme spoke about the various research projects at BUiD that received funding from both local and international funding bodies, which enabled them to conduct cutting-edge research in this field. He believes professionals who wish to upgrade their knowledge and not remain static in their career should join this course. The course is designed in such a way that it keeps the Engineers abreast of the latest standards and technology in the field of BSE.
