Prof. Eman Gaad and Dr. Nadera Alborno Contribute a Chapter in an International Handbook for Special Education

Wednesday, July 19, 2017

Dr Eman Gaad, Professor of Special Education and the Dean of Faculty of Education at BUiD and Dr Nadera Alborno, Associate Professor of Education at AUD and BUiD’s Alumna, were invited to contribute a chapter about the UAE to the Praeger Handbook of International Special Education that was edited by Dr James Patton and Dr Micheal Wehmeyer. The handbook presents a concise data-driven overview of special education services in over than 70 countries across the globe using the Article on Education in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) as the analytical base. Two primary frames were utilised: the relationship between special and general education in the country and the country’s system as aligned with the Article on Education in the UN Convention on the Rights of Person with Disabilities (CRPD). The handbook appears in two volumes, each chapter offers information about the country in general, followed by sections on the public education system, the private education system, the special education system, teacher training requirements, and barriers to and promising trends in inclusive and special education. Thus, a valuable reference will serve researchers, graduate students, and policymakers in special and general education around the world.

In this major international publication, Dr Gaad and Dr Alborno managed to document the UAE’s journey and current efforts and progress in implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in order to provide persons with disabilities with access and equal opportunities to education and empowerment in inclusive environments.
