The purpose of the MSc Systems Engineering will be to provide a multi-disciplinary engineering programme delivered by the Faculty of Engineering. It will contribute to defining and advancing the professional practice of Systems Engineering in the UAE and in the region.

For the purposes of the programme "Systems" are arrangements of electro-mechanical components and are sub-assemblies configured to perform useful work. Typically, industrial manufacturing, power generation, process and refining, aerospace and robotic mechanisms are all considered as engineering systems.

Sensational cases are occasionally reported when a large scale systems related disaster causes fatalities, contamination and long term health hazards. In recent years the incidents at Chernobyl, Bhopal, Flixborough and Three Miles island are reminders of what can happen as a result of ignorance of effective procedures for systems engineering.

These are some of the notorious events which have affected many individuals, families and whole areas of population. However, there are many more unreported incidents, where the scale of events is less although sharing common causes. These arise from a lack of knowledge of engineering systems in general and specifically in areas such as powered feedback controlled systems and the consequences of ill-informed experimentation and maintenance practices.

Unfortunately, the prediction of the performance of even the simplest inter-connected system is difficult, without the employment of appropriate analysis techniques. Although the physical behaviour of particular components may be known, their assembly in to an active system capable of useful work, with the incorporation of feedback control, introduces the possibility of lethality.

Equally, this form of regulation is necessary to achieve system accuracy, repeatability, wide-band linearity and the rapid response characteristics required in power, process, aerospace applications and in volume manufacturing. With this innovation the system's energy consumption and dissipation becomes a function of the operational error or errors arising, and their employment as the instrument of feedback correction.

Performance assessment, by way of empirical judgment, becomes impossible with the inclusion of even single feedback loop, as in simple circuit theory. General analysis, identification and testing/tuning procedures now become essential together with an understanding of the systems dynamics and interactive behaviour, derived from theoretical prediction and modelling procedures.

In this regard the programme of study described in this document introduces system concepts, identification and analysis methods which are universally applicable. The approaches incorporated advance from simple evaluation, assessment methods and application studies enabling progression towards in-depth dissertation research projects.

The use of modelling and simulation methods to compliment theoretical understanding will be used throughout the programme. Moreover, the opportunity to investigate industrial problems will be encouraged, by way of assignments and dissertation studies. 

Programme of Study
The programme is designed to develop individuals with or without professional knowledge and practical skills, defined by the engineering community for the provision of effective Systems Engineering in their respective organisations. It will be specifically designed to allow those in full-time employment to take the programme in part-time mode and complete the programme within three to five years.

Structure of Programme
The MSc in Systems Engineering is available as a full-time (12 months) or part-time (24 months) programme of study. It consists of 8 modules (15 credits each) and a dissertation. (60 credits)
