Research Design and Time Management

OVERVIEW

Research Design and time management are critical to the successful completion of a research project. This interactive and informative workshop will draw on practical examples to promote understanding and capacity building.  Participants will explore techniques for designing, managing and delivering research projects.

The programme consists of a combination of presentations, workshop sessions, and practical planning activities. Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • consider and discuss expectations of research;
  • share and reflect on their own experiences of research engagement;
  • identify good practice for the different stages of research projects;
  • develop strategies for dealing with common problems that occur during research activity;
  • plan for how they can implement and support changes in personal and/or institutional research practice;
  • explore their approach to time management
  • Examine ways of planning their research
  • analyse the possible uses of time
  • establish task priorities
  • consider how to minimise interruptions

This courses can be taken as:

  • a stand-alone modules
  • part of a continuous professional development (CPD) course
  • organisational training

Session 1

Workshop: Planning your research

This session will explore planning and management techniques in research activity.  Participants will have the opportunity to explore their approach to time management, examine ways of planning research, analyse possible uses of time and establish task priorities.

Session 2

Workshop: Research proposals

This session will examine, in detail, the approach, purpose and process of designing a successful research proposal. The session will explore research design, the importance of a good question and the need for an appropriate methodological approach.  Participants will have the opportunity to work on their own proposal over the course of the session

Session 3

Workshop: Timelines, workflow and managing your time effectively

During the session, participants will have the opportunity to create a timetable for their research and develop strategies to work more effectively.  The session will identify barriers to productivity and discuss and outline responses to combat this.

Workshop: Designing a research project

Drawing on the previous session, participants will be taken through the process of research project design and will be given the opportunity to use the practical skills gained over the course of the day to begin the process of producing a project design template. This session will highlight the key issues of design, monitoring, evaluation and delivery that are critical to the success of any research project.

 

DELIVERY METHOD

This 1-day workshop features interactive lectures, workshops and practical applications facilitated by leading academics and practitioners in the fields of data and research.

 

DELIVERY HOURS AND DURATION

The training is delivered over the course of 1 day from 08:30 to 17:00.

8 training hours per day.
