Climate change and its impacts are an immediate global environmental concern. The built environment is a major contributor to carbon emissions and depletion of resources. In addition, the indoor environment within buildings has a major impact on the health, well-being and productivity of occupants. A more sustainable approach to design can be achieved using a combination of passive and active strategies utilising the latest knowledge, design, and modelling strategies. This will reduce energy needs, which in turn will reduce both local and global pollution and provide more comfortable and healthy indoor and outdoor living environments. BUiD’s SDBE programme contains concentrations covering Architectural Design, Interior Design, Smart Buildings and Urban Design. The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Sustainable Built Environments meets an important need in skill and knowledge in the increasingly important area of environmentally responsive design. Operation, energy and policy requirements with sustainable and environmentally conscious practices are becoming an integral part of current thinking as well as future strategies worldwide. This is especially important for this region as most GCC countries are trying to move away from fossil-based economies and to work on establishing a more sustainable future in terms of energy resources and advanced technologies, as well as a healthier and more productive environment. An SBE graduate will gain knowledge and skills in the areas of sustainable design strategies, advanced energy modelling, urban infrastructure and transport, interior environment, and environmental policy and economics.
