BUiD Registrar and Chief Administrative Officer participates in THE MENA Universities Summit 2021

Hugh Martin FRSA, Registrar and Chief Administrative Officer, spoke at the Times Higher Education MENA Universities Summit 2021 which was hosted by New York University – Abu Dhabi with the theme ’Nurturing Global Talent and Research Excellence’.

Distinguished university leaders around the world participated in the Summit including the Vice-Chancellor of the United Arab Emirates University, the President and CEO of the UAE Higher Colleges of Technology, and the President of New York University – Abu Dhabi.

Hugh highlighted the encouragement the Summit had already been given by HE Hussain Al Hammadi, the UAE Minister of Education, and HE Omar Saif Ghobash, the UAE Assistant Minister for Culture and Public Diplomacy. They both stressed the importance of more collaboration and more internationalisation in higher education in the region, and less reliance on STEM.

Hugh participated in a panel titled ’Higher education collaboration in the Middle East: Moving towards a thriving ecosystem’ where he made the point that those of us who run universities can learn so much more by sharing knowledge and ideas with each other than we do by keeping apart and remaining suspicious of and competitive with each other.

The panel discussed the need for more collaboration in higher education in MENA in order to share best practice and create a more open environment for educators, regulators and broader society to work together.
