BUiD’s Registrar and Chief Administrative Officer joins the panel in a webinar about legal hazards during COVID-19

Hugh Martin, the Registrar and Chief Administrative Officer at The British University in Dubai, joined leaders from NYU Abu Dhabi and Al Tamimi & Co on a panel to discuss legal hazards in higher education in the MENA region during COVID-19.

Organised and hosted by the Times Higher Education in London, the webinar considered how universities best protect themselves when recruiting new staff during and after the pandemic. It also looked at the changes COVID-19 has brought to social parameters, international travel, and employment contracts, and how universities should work with and articulate these changes to incoming staff and students.

Attendees at the webinar included university leaders, human resource professionals, and industry experts from the UAE, the UK, France, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Kenya, Ethiopia, the Philippines, and the USA.

Hugh stressed that the situation was still extremely fluid; rather than there being a ‘new normal’ he argued for continued adaptability in university recruitment – of both staff and students. He emphasised the importance of flexibility, open communication, and above all putting student experience at the heart of all decision-making by university leaderships.
