TED is a non-profit organisation devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes on a diverse mix of topics. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

What is TEDx?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED created a programme called TEDx. TEDx is a programme of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Many of the world’s leading universities and education institutions have run TEDx events as part of their thought leadership and their engagement with their communities and wider society.
At our TEDxTheBritishUniversityinDubai event, TED Talks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx programme, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organised.
TEDxTheBritishUniversityinDubai was started in January 2020 as a way of engaging our students, staff, and stakeholders. After almost a year of preparation and in spite of the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic we were able to showcase some brilliant speakers at this inaugural event. Hosting a TEDx event gives us the opportunity to share and showcase the unique innovation and ideas that our community creates and offers, not only within the UAE and Middle East but in a wider global context.
We all agree that sustainability must be addressed now, in order to secure the future of our planet. Sustainability is often broken into three intertwined pillars, formally referred to as economic, environmental, and social, and informally as people, planet, and profit. Essentially these three pillars provide the basis through which we must provide solution-oriented approaches around issues pertaining to social sustainability, such as environmental justice, human health, resource security, and education. Human health greatly depends on the quality of a person’s environment; as a result environmental issues such as water quality, air quality, biodiversity, and the existence of environmental stressors such as greenhouse gases must be addressed. Economic sustainability cannot be ignored as it is also deeply connected to both social and environmental sustainability in terms of job creation, profitability, and the proper accounting for ecosystem services to ensure cost benefit optimisation.
In 2023, once again we plan to bring you new ideas worth spreading in our third edition of the event.
