Being a performance process-oriented architect, not product – driven, I can undoubtedly said that the most important and difficult role in sustainable design is the pre-design stage, the core of IPD. It is not a question of how the addressing of the passive strategies in the integrated design via inventing solution will have the greatest impact on the construction, building performance and system efficiency.
In general, all design projects should engage the passive strategies in a way that dramatically reduces or eliminates the need of for energy.
Any building can become “Zero net – Energy” by the installation of enough renewable energy systems, it makes more reason to first reduce the energy needs of the building through good passive design. Yes, multiple PV panels may look attractive but they strongly reflect the failure of designer to reduce the energy needs of the building through passive design.
