Introduction to Automation Systems

The course introduces the basics of Factory Automation systems by setting goals and giving specific tasks explained through step-by-step instructions and exercises which enables the trainees to have a practical experience.

Course contents:

*          Automation Process instance

*          Automation system architecture and components

*          Basics of PLC Programming

*          Configuration of the Human Machine Interface (HMI)

*          SCADA, Safety, instruments and other Automation Components

*          Cyber Security in Automation       

Structure of course

Automation Process instance (30 minutes)

To facilitates understanding Factory Automation (FA), we are using a real process of a sorting and packing machine (conveyor belt demo kit) as an example. In all sessions, we will refer to this example as use case.

Automation system architecture and components (2 hours)

In this session, we will brief the role of different components in automation system and how to select the right component, based on the process. This includes components like:

– Programming Logic Controller (PLC)

– Industrial communication network

– Human Machine interface (HMI)

At the end of this session, we will select the right hardware for the sample process.

Basics of PLC Programming Demo (1 hour)

Configuration and programming of the selected controller to automate sample process will be briefly explained in this session. Basics of the following programming languages will be covered in this session:

– Ladder,

– Function block diagram.

– And Libraries

At the end of this session, we will demonstrate the configuration and logic.

Monitoring and Control demo (1 hour)

Operator interaction with automation system is through Human Machine Interface (HMI). In this session, we will briefly explain how to configure HMI for:

– Static pages

– Dynamics

At the end of this session, the design of the HMI to control and monitor the sample process will be demonstrated.

Sensors, Drives and other Automation Components (30 Minutes)

Depending on the process to be automated, additional components like sensors, actuators, drives and instruments will be required. In this session, we will briefly discuss about these components and their application in different automation systems.
