Dr. Maria Papadaki is an Associate Professor at the British University in Dubai (BUiD) and a Managing Director for the Dubai Centre for Risk and Innovation (DCRI). She has over ten years of experience in Risk Management from both Academia and Industry, with numerous years in the implementation, development, improvement, and management of risk frameworks, tools, and techniques. Maria worked previously in Rolls-Royce plc, leading different Enterprise Risk Management, Project Management, and Supply chain roles. In 2013, Dr Maria Papadaki was seconded as an Interim Head of Risk, leading the risk management for the UK Nuclear Restoration (UKNR), a joint venture between AMEC, Atkins and Rolls-Royce plc bidding for the largest nuclear decommissioning project in UK (7.2 bn). Later The University of Manchester appointed her as a senior relationship manager and the PMO office head for BUiD. In a volunteering role Maria initiated the idea and led the development of the first innovation Hub (H2B) in Crete, Greece, on behalf of the Heraklion Chamber of Commerce in 2015. She then Joined BUiD in 2016 as a Managing Director for DCRI and lead the development of digital certificates for BUiD’s graduates, which made the university 1st in the Middle East and 3rd in the world implementing Blockchain technology in education. In 2018 she was appointed as a Board of Directors for the Institute of Risk Management (IRM) in London. Under this profile, she leads the global education and training standards strategy for the institute (IRM). Maria is a visiting lecturer at The University of Manchester, and her research interests are now focused on the integration of Enterprise risk management with disruptive technologies such as Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, and IoT.
Samar Shaker joined BUID staff ( October 2014) at the Professional Development Unit as a Senior Administrator, where she is investing her time developing and designing professional training courses and CPD workshops that best fit the industry requirements in various fields. In addition, she is also the Technical Supervisor for the Indoor Air Quality Lab at BUID for the Faculty of Engineering and IT – Sustainable Design of the Built Environment MSc. Program.
She studied her early education in the UAE then joined the faculty of Interior Design in the American University in Dubai (AUD), graduated with BFA in Interior Design in 2007. During her course work, she had always paid attention to the durability and re-interior fitting in comparison to cost. The passion for her career had been her motivator during her practical experience in various establishments in the UAE where she was able to enhance her expertise and put her studies into a solid ground. After a couple of years of industrial practice, she enrolled for BUiD masters’ degree in the Sustainable Design of the Built Environment taking her preferable Interior Architecture specialty “sustainability” into a further step and graduated successfully in 2015.
Her current research interests focuses on experimental and simulation study of energy efficiency, smart and sustainable building materials, advanced energy reduction and conservation practices and in depth Energy Management modules for her PhD Architecture and Sustainable Built Environment studies in BUiD . Samar is also a LEED Green Associate Practitioner, a Certified Energy Auditor and a Certified Energy Manager.
