Dr Ahmed Awad, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and IT, co- authored a research paper titled, ‘Validating temporal compliance patterns: A unified approach with over various data models’ in Q1 Information Systems Journal.
This research addresses the challenge of automatically verifying not just the order of events in business processes but also their compliance with strict time constraints, such as enforcing deadlines like “payment within 24 hours.”
The authors, Nesma M. Zaki, Iman M.A. Helal, Ehab E. Hassanein, and Ahmed Awad, propose using a powerful logical framework (known as Metric Temporal Logic or 𝑀𝑇𝐿𝑓) that can understand and verify rules that involve both the order of events and their specific timing. What makes this approach particularly valuable is its universal compatibility—whether your company stores data in traditional flat files, modern relational databases like MySQL, or cutting-edge graph databases like Neo4j, this system can automatically translate business rules into the appropriate query language for your specific setup. This means businesses can efficiently monitor compliance with internal policies and external regulations without creating technical debt or needing expensive system overhauls, since the solution adapts to whatever data infrastructure they already have in place.
