Research / Research News / BUiD’s alumna and Professor co-author a research paper on Sick House Syndrome (SHS)
Dr Muna Ali, BUiD’s alumna and Prof. Bassam Abu-Hijleh Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and IT, co-authored a research paper titled, ‘Sick house syndrome in Dubai: A cross-sectional analysis of residential and demographic risk factors’ in the Building and Environment journal.
Their study investigates how Sick House Syndrome (SHS) is a growing health concern globally yet remains underexplored in hot-arid environments such as those of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. This study presents the first large-scale investigation of SHS prevalence, symptom patterns, and associated demographic and building determinants using validated instruments in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE)—a rapidly urbanizing emirate with distinctive environmental, architectural and socio-cultural characteristics.
